Cater 2U (I Don't Need a Laptop or IPad)
Well hello! I haven't been promoting this blog at all, but I noticed that the view count is going up. I don't care about the numbers, but I love this space, thank you for going here, and I will be catering to you and will be doing my best to treat you to positive writing from me every weekend.
Anyway, my Macbook inexplicably died sometime in the middle of last year. I spent a fortune on buying that thing simply because I loved the size, look, and feel of it. I believed it was very me. I bought in 2017, back when people were scoffing at it, dismissing it for having a weird keyboard and no USB ports, but costing so much (at least Php68,000) at the time. To use a USB device on it, you had to buy a Php3000-something dongle which has a single USB port. It was very impractical, in hindsight, but I was okay and happy with it. Served me well for a couple of years.
When I moved to my new job, I was issued an HP laptop that was fast, had impressive anti-virus software, and had what seemed like unlimited cloud storage. Since it was what I had to be on most of the day, I only got to use the Macbook on the weekends when I browsed the net for fun and watched my shows.
So after 3 years, it died, and the Apple service center said I had to pay Php56,000 to fix it. Thank you, next.
It's been several months that I've been without a personal laptop or iPad. I'm typing this from the "house" laptop -- you know, the one in the house that's for everyone. Been subsisting on my phone for most things. Now though I'm thinking if it's time that I get either a laptop or an iPad to work on personal projects, this blog included, and the options are intimidating. So it's been a couple of months that I've decided I'll get something, but to date I haven't figured it out. A Macbook Air with the M1 chip means great specs, portability, and value-for-money, and all the online reviewers suggested getting that instead of an iPad if you have to pick one. But obviously, nothing compares with the joy of using an iPad. The iPad Pro also has an M1 chip but would cost far more than a Macbook Air if I want all the bells and whistles on it (and of course I would) but would not be at par with the Macbook Air's performance.
So there. Still torn. To be honest, I can afford to buy both, but I don't need two. I don't even need anything, apparently, since I've gone for almost a year now without both. Meh. I can go for a year more. Let's see. It's exciting to be indecisive sometimes. The possibilities are endless. As a consumer and tech observer it's fun to see Apple and Microsoft and all those tech companies competing to offer me the best of their wares, watching them jostle each other to outsell their products to me. Amusing.
As I grow older and as my income grows (thank you God), I've been realizing that the most fun thing that one can do with money is to show it who's boss. I'm the freaking boss of my money. I tell you when I want to use you. I make you multiply when I want you to. You don't enslave me. If a company wants to brainwash me to sell their product, try to loop me in their "message", I stare them down and say not today, henny. I'll buy when it's smart for me to buy it, not because of your marketing. Ha! Okay that's what I tell myself on most days.
Happy Sunday.
*Image not mine, it's from the Uniqlo PH app - it's a Haruki Murakami shirt I terribly wanted but didn't buy. I just liked the graphic, I didn't need to wear it.
